How long is each session, and how often should I come?

With the exception of free first sessions and drop-in sessions, which are limited to 30 minutes, sessions can be 30–60 minutes in length. We recommend spending 19–22 minutes in the sauna followed by 1–5 minutes in the cold plunge per round. For optimal results, aim for 3 sessions per week, totaling approximately 57 minutes of sauna and 11 minutes of cold plunge exposure.

What type of saunas does Contrast use?

We use Sunlighten’s hand-crafted infrared saunas; the safest saunas on the market!

Is infrared safe? Does it contain EMF?

Yes! Our saunas use the most effective and safe infrared heaters on the market. The EMF and ELF levels (radiation) in our infrared saunas are 3 – 5 times below the threshold of concern.

What is color light therapy and do you have red light?

Color Light Therapy also known as Chromotherapy, is a method of treatment that uses the visible spectrum (colors) of electromagnetic light to restore balance to one’s physiology. It is a centuries-old concept used successfully over the years to treat various diseases and ailments. Red light is a form of color light therapy and all of our saunas do have a red light option.

Is there a sauna protocol I should follow?

Proper sauna and plunge tub use is important; just like you warm up and prepare your body before a workout, there are a few basic steps you should take to guarantee maximum benefit out of your contrast therapy sessions. Drink a minimum of 8 oz. of water to prepare for an increase in core body temperature. Remove all jewelry and makeup prior to arriving at the studio. Both may cause burning of the skin when exposed to extreme heat. Keep the tech at home! Extreme temperatures may damage electronic devices. Replenish your body with proper hydration and electrolytes post-session. LMNT electrolyte packets are our favorite and are available for purchase at the front desk!

What are your sauna cleaning and sanitation protocols?

Due to the infrared light and cedar wood, our saunas are naturally antimicrobial, antibacterial, and anti-fungal. All rooms are cleaned and disinfected by the Contrast Studio team after every use

What type of cold plunge does Contrast use?

We use Alpine Cold Tubs by Chilly GOAT and Plunge tubs to ensure the highest quality and comfort.

How cold is the temperature of the water?

We currently offer 2 different session options. The water in a standard session ranges from 50-57 degrees Fahrenheit. The water in an advanced session ranges from 40-47 degrees Fahrenheit.

What are your cold plunge cleaning and sanitation protocols?

The Chilly GOAT cold tub features a built-in filtration system and a UV sanitation bar that helps remove impurities and neutralize harmful microorganisms — keeping the water clean and clear with minimal maintenance. We also test and balance the pH, alkalinity, and chlorine levels multiple times a day to ensure optimal water quality. And because the water is cold, you need fewer chemicals to keep the water clean, clear, and safe for soaking. This is because colder water slows down the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms, reducing the need for a lot of chemicals.

Do I need to completely submerge in the cold plunge to get its benefits?

A common beginner mistake with cold plunging is not submerging deep enough. For maximum benefits, you’ll want to submerge deep enough for the cold water to reach the vagus nerve located near your collarbones.

Will I be losing water weight during contrast?

Yes, infrared sauna usage does cause water weight loss. While that water weight will be regained upon rehydration, the calories burned are real! As you relax in the gentle heat of our saunas, your body is hard at work pumping blood, increasing circulation, and producing sweat to cool you down. This results in a passive workout and high caloric burn!

Is it true I am still burning calories up to an hour after my session?

Yes! In response to the cold water, your body works in overdrive to reheat itself through a process called thermogenesis, which can cause a 350% boost in metabolism! We encourage you not to step back into the sauna or take a warm shower for at least 30-60 minutes post cold exposure to allow your body to complete the natural reheat process and achieve maximum results.

Am I able to do contrast therapy with pre-existing health conditions?

While our services provide many health benefits, we do recommend consulting your physician prior to use, especially those with pre-existing health conditions. Do not use while pregnant, intoxicated, or predisposed to bleeding. Those with a fever, insensitivity to heat, or a pacemaker should avoid sauna usage. If you are on prescription medications, sauna usage may also alter the medication’s effect.

What is the difference between infrared saunas and other types of saunas?

Infrared saunas use infrared heaters to directly heat the body from the inside out, rather than heating the surrounding air. This leads to a deeper heat penetration to promote more efficient sweating and detoxification. Due to the deeper penetration, infrared saunas can operate at much lower temperatures for the same or better results.

Can I use my membership at different locations?

One of the many perks of our memberships is the ability to access all Contrast locations!

Why don’t you offer session packs?

The “sweet spot” to achieve optimal results from contrast therapy is 57 minutes of heat and 11 minutes of cold per week. This equates to roughly 3 Contrast Studio sessions per week and anything less than that is leaving adaptation on the table. Selling any frequency less than that would be a disservice to you.
